How can one be unintentionally green?
My dad has had this car for like eight years. It was fantastically old and amazingly disastrous, the doors didn't work (and forget about seatbelts). This car, a staple of our family, has died at last and gone to live in Kidney Foundation heaven. Or hell.
Since the bus system in Sayers is so great, Dad had just been using mass transit to get to work. And I've joined him on the days I volunteer at his office. It's a funny experience, seeing the range of people who look homeless or professorial.
While I'm at his office helping out with the phones etc., there was a call from my youth pastor in Faulkner about something. It was sad, for me. I've never missed Faulkner's physical attributes, but I miss the people like crazy. I'm not saying I fit there like a glove-- I've never fit like a glove anywhere, being a rather odd-shaped hand accessory-- but I do love the people.
And that is why I have to go to Maud Lovelace Public High School. I need to meet new people to love.
I need to explain my obsession with Lucas Grabeel's rendition of Go the Distance.
I have often dreamed
Of a far off place
Where a hero's welcome
Would be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer
When they see my face
And a voice keeps saying
This is where I'm meant to be
I'll be there someday
I can go the distance
I will find my way
If I can be strong
I know ev'ry mile
Will be worth my while
When I go the distance
I'll be right where I belong
Down an unknown road
To embrace my fate
Though the road may wander
It will lead me to you
And a thousand years
Would be worth the wait
It may take a lifetime
But somehow I'll see it through
And I won't look back
I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track
No I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope
But I won't lose hope
Till I go the distance
And my journey is complete
But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart
Like a shooting star
I can go the distance
I will search the world
I will face its harms
I don't care how far
I can go the distance
TillI find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms...
I will search the world
I will face its harms
TillI find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms...
His voice is perfect for this... the whole song is about perseverance, about keeping on keeping on through difficult times. The song is romantic and ambitious and sexy and soulful all at the same time. It's won a Gabby award, in my book, though I don't know about Grammies.
It's mainly about searching for something you haven't had before, but just the fact that you haven't found it... doesn't mean it's not there.
